Dr. Matthias Buchert has a PhD in chemistry (TU Darmstadt) and has worked as a scientist at the Darmstadt office of Oeko-Institut since 1992. He has been Head of the Resources & Transport Division since 1998. Mr Buchert has many years of project experience in the fields of resource efficiency, recycling of precious and special metals, scenarios and life cycle assessments. Current research focuses include work on the demand and supply of raw ma-terials in the electromobility sector. Examples include the project "Strategies for the sustain-able supply of raw materials for electromobility" for Agora Verkehrswende (2017), the BMBF joint project Fab4LiB (2019), the work "Resource consumption of the passenger vehicle sec-tor in Germany until 2035 - the impact of different drive systems" commissioned by the Fed-eral Environment Ministry and completed in 2021 and recently “Securing Germany’s Sover-eignty Resilient supply chains for the transformation to climate neutrality by 2045” commis-sioned by the Climate Neutrality Foundation. Buchert’s team has been employed by the European Commission to prepare the new EU Battery Regulation in the past seven years.
