The talk will describe recent advances in understanding the effect of inner-cell gradients and importance of thermal boundary conditions on degradation in realistic battery systems, using modelling and experiments. In order to achieve truly predictive models of battery degradation, it will be shown that battery performance data must be collected under realistic boundary conditions, and models must be used that account for the anisotropic internal battery structure and its effects on the thermal-electrical coupling.
